Generic "Desyrel" belongs to the group of medicines known as antidepressants or ``mood elevators.'' It affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression. It is used to relieve mental depression and depression that sometimes occurs with anxiety.
Generic "Desyrel" is well absorbed after oral administration with mean peak plasma levels obtained within 0.5 to 2 hours after ingestion. Absorption is somewhat delayed and enhanced by food. The mean plasma elimination half-life is 4.4 hours for the period from 3 to 10 hours after dosing, and 7 to 8 hours for the period from 10 to 34 hours. Generic "Desyrel" is indicated for the treatment of depression. The efficacy of Generic "Desyrel" has been demonstrated in both inpatient and outpatient settings and for depressed patients with and without prominent anxiety.

Treating depression. It may also be used for relief of an anxiety disorder (eg, sleeplessness, tension), chronic pain. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Generic "Desyrel" is a tetracyclic antidepressant. It is thought to increase the activity of one of the brain chemicals (serotonin), which helps elevate mood.

The dosage is dependent upon the diagnosis and the severity of the condition and the individual patient's response. The daily dosage is usually administered in three divided doses.
Adults:
Depression - The optimal dosage is between 300 - 400 mg/day. It is suggested that a starting dose of 150 mg/day is given for the first week, increasing to 300 mg/day or higher according to the clinical response (600 mg/day dosage has been reported).
Mixed anxiety and depression - The recommended starting dose is between 100 - 150 mg/day. When depression is the predominant symptom, a dose of 300 - 400 mg daily may be required to obtain a satisfactory response.

Children: Generic "Desyrel" is not recommended for use in children.

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to trazodone. Before using Generic "Desyrel", tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have: bipolar disorder (manic depression); schizophrenia, or other psychiatric illness; a history of drug abuse or suicidal thoughts; or if you have recently had a heart attack.
If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use Generic "Desyrel", or you may need dosage adjustments or special tests during treatment.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at your next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Overdosage of Generic "Desyrel" may cause an increase in incidence or severity of any of the reported adverse reactions, e.g. hypotension and excessive sedation. In one known suicide attempt, the patient presented with symptoms of drowsiness and weakness 3 hours after ingesting 7.5 g (12.5 times the maximum daily dose) of Generic "Desyrel". Recovery was uneventful. Death by deliberate or accidental overdosage has not been reported.

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible: fainting spells; fast or irregular heartbeat (palpitations); painful erections or other sexual dysfunction; skin rash; trembling.

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention: blurred vision; constipation; drowsiness, dizziness; dry mouth; headache; muscle aches or pains; nausea, vomiting; unusual tiredness or weakness.

Generic "Desyrel" may intensify the effects of alcohol. Do not drink alcohol while taking Generic "Desyrel".
If Generic "Desyrel" is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered.
It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Generic "Desyrel" with the following:

• Antidepressant drugs known as MAO inhibitors, including Nardil and Parnate
• Other antidepressants such as Prozac and Norpramin
• Barbiturates such as Seconal
• Central nervous system depressants such as Demerol and Halcion
• Chlorpromazine
• Digoxin (Lanoxin)
• Drugs for high blood pressure such as Catapres and Wytensin
• Phenytoin (Dilantin)
• Warfarin (Coumadin)

The effects of Generic "Desyrel" during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. This medication may appear in breast milk. If treatment with Generic "Desyrel" is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding your baby until your treatment is finished.
