DiamoxCLASS and MECHANISM of Action Generic "Diamox" is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. Reversible inhibition of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase resulting in reduction of hydrogen ion secretion at renal tubule and an increased renal excretion of sodium, potassium, bicarbonate, and water to decrease production of aqueous humor; also inhibits carbonic anhydrase in central nervous system to retard abnormal and excessive discharge from CNS neurons.
Active Ingredients: Acetazolamide. Inactive Ingredients: Microcrystalline cellulose, sodium lauryl sulfate and talc. What is Generic "Diamox" PRESCRIBED For? Generic "Diamox" is used to treat glaucoma, a condition in which increased pressure in the eye can lead to gradual loss of vision. Generic "Diamox" decreases the pressure in the eye. Generic "Diamox" is also used to reduce the severity and duration of symptoms (upset stomach, headache, shortness of breath, dizziness, drowsiness, and fatigue) of altitude (mountain) sickness. Generic "Diamox" is used with other medicines to reduce edema (excess water retention) and to help control seizures in certain types of epilepsy.
This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information. How Should I Take Generic "Diamox"? Take Generic "Diamox" exactly as directed by your doctor.
Take each dose with a full glass of water. Take Generic "Diamox" with food if it upsets your stomach.
Store Generic "Diamox" at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Diamox"? Generic "Diamox" therapy is contraindicated in situations in which sodium and/or potassium blood serum levels are depressed, in cases of marked kidney and liver disease or dysfunction, in suprarenal gland failure, and in hyperchloremic acidosis. It is contraindicated in patients with cirrhosis because of the risk of development of hepatic encephalopathy.
Long-term administration of Generic "Diamox" is contraindicated in patients with chronic noncongestive angle-closure glaucoma since it may permit organic closure of the angle to occur while the worsening glaucoma is masked by lowered intraocular pressure.
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE? Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.
What happens if I OVERDOSE? Symptoms of over dosage of Generic "Diamox" are made evident by the following: Drowsiness, Decreased appetite, Nausea, Vomiting, Dizziness, Dumbness or tingling, Shaking.
Ringing in the ears If you feel any of the above conditions with Generic "Diamox" , seek medical help immediately What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Diamox"? If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Generic "Diamox": an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives); a sore throat or a fever; unusual bleeding or bruising; side or groin pain; tingling or tremors in your hands or feet; or a rash.
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Generic "Diamox" and talk to your doctor if you experience: decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, or changes in taste; drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, or weakness; nervousness or mild tremor; headache or confusion; increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight; worsening gout; loss of blood sugar control (if you are diabetic); ringing in your ears or hearing problems; changes in your vision. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome. What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Diamox"? Generic "Diamox" may increase the blood levels of carbamazepine and quinidine.
Generic "Diamox" may decrease the blood levels of primidone and increase that of carbamazepine. Individuals taking these combinations must be monitored.
There may be an increase in side effects such as drowsiness, confusion, lethargy, hyperventilation and ringing in the ears when Generic "Diamox" is taken with aspirin. When Generic "Diamox" is taken with other anti-epileptic medicines (phenobarbitone, phenytoin or primidone) there may be an increased risk of severe bone softening occurring. There may be an increased incidence of tremor, anxiety, insomnia and fast heart rate when Generic "Diamox" is taken with ephedrine or pseudoephedrine. Additional Information Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.
