Duphaston

CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic "Duphaston" is a type of synthetic hormone, which is similar to one of the body's main sex hormones (progesterone). Progesterone is the body hormone that plays an important part in the developing of the healthy endometrium (endometrium is absolutely essential in the occurrence of a pregnancy). This hormone produces a couple of times during a normal menstrual period. It also helps in the maintaining of the womb lining, (making it easier to avoid the risk of spontaneous abortion or of miscarriage) in the case of women who have had many miscarriages.

Active Ingredients: Dydrogesterone
Inactive Ingredients: Lactose, maize starch, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, colloidal anhydrous silica, macrogol 400 and titanium dioxide (E171)

What is Generic "Duphaston" PRESCRIBED For?

How Should I Take Generic "Duphaston"?

Swallow the tablet(s) with water, with or without food. The number of tablets you take and the days you take them on will depend on what you are being treated for.
    The usual doses are:
  • To relieve pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS): The usual starting dose is one tablet twice a day for 15 days from days 12 to 26 of your monthly cycle.
  • To stop heavy or prolonged periods: Take one tablet twice a day for five to seven days. Your doctor may prescribe you estrogen treatment as well, because this type of bleeding usually happens just before the menopause when your body is making less estrogen.
  • To prevent heavy or prolonged periods: Take one tablet twice a day from days 11 to 25 of your monthly cycle. Your doctor may prescribe estrogen as well (as explained under the last heading).
  • To ease period pains: Take one tablet twice a day from days 5 to 25 of your monthly cycle.
  • To ease period pains in young girls: The usual dose is one tablet twice a day, but follow your doctor's instructions. Your doctor will tell you when to stop taking the treatment.
  • To relieve symptoms of endometriosis (womb tissue that grows outside of the womb): Take one tablet two or three times a day, either from days 5 to 25 of your cycle, or every single day.
  • To overcome amenorrhoea (the absence of periods): Take one tablet twice a day from days 11 to 25 of your monthly cycle. Your doctor will also prescribe estrogen from days 1 to 25 of your monthly cycle.
  • For infertility or irregular periods: Take one tablet twice a day from days 11 to 25 of your monthly cycle. You should take the tablets until you have had at least 6 periods. If you become pregnant, tell your doctor.
  • For threatened miscarriage: Take four tablets at once, then one tablet every 8 hours until your symptoms stop. If they do not stop, or they return during treatment, increase the dose to 2 tablets every 8 hours and keep taking them for a week.
  • If you have had miscarriages before: Start taking the tablets as early as possible, preferably before you become pregnant. Take one tablet twice a day from days 11 to 25 of your monthly cycle until you become pregnant, and continue taking them (one twice a day) until you have been pregnant for 20 weeks.
