CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic "Effexor" belongs to the class of antidepressant medications known as serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). It is used for the treatment of depression. How Should I Take Generic "Effexor"?

Take Generic "Effexor" once at the same time each day. Swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not divide, crush, or chew it. However, if you have trouble swallowing pills, you may take Generic "Effexor" by carefully opening the capsule and sprinkling the entire contents on a spoonful of applesauce, followed by a glass of water.
The usual starting dose is 75 milligrams a day, divided into 2 or 3 smaller doses, and taken with food. If needed, your doctor may gradually increase your daily dose in steps of no more than 75 milligrams at a time up to a maximum of 375 milligrams per day.
If you have kidney or liver disease or are taking other medications, your doctor will adjust your dosage accordingly.

It is not necessary to make it up. Skip the missed dose and continue with your next scheduled dose. Do not take 2 doses at once.

What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Effexor"?

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
    Rare or uncommon:
  • abnormal body movements, for example, of your tongue or upper body
  • difficulty breathing
  • fainting spells
  • problems passing urine (increase or decrease in frequency)
  • mania (over-active behavior)
  • rapid heartbeat, or palpitations
  • seizures (convulsions)
    More common:
  • agitation, anxiety, or restlessness, especially in the first week of treatment or when doses are changed

  • triptans (e.g., sumatriptan, rizatriptan, zolmitriptan))
  • tryptophan
Generic "Effexor" has been found to reduce blood levels of the HIV drug indinavir. It's best to check with your doctor before combining Generic "Effexor" with any other drug or herbal product.

Additional Information

The effects of Generic "Effexor" during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, tell your doctor immediately. Generic "Effexor" should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.
