Elavil

CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic "Elavil" is one of a group of medicines called tricyclic antidepressant drugs. These medicines alter the levels of chemicals in the brain to relieve the symptoms of depression.
Generic "Elavil" works by preventing the re-absorption of noradrenaline and serotonin back into the nerve cells. It therefore prolongs the mood-lightening effect of any released noradrenaline and serotonin. This helps relieve depression.

Active Ingredients: Amitriptyline hydrochloride
Inactive Ingredients: Hypromellose, macrogol, talc, titanium dioxide, quinoline yellow, iron oxide, sunset yellow, indigo carmine.

What is Generic "Elavil" PRESCRIBED For?

Generic "Elavil" is used to relieve symptoms of mental depression such as tiredness; feelings of sadness, worthlessness, or guilt; sleeping too much; insomnia; changes in appetite; loss of interest in daily activities; and thoughts of death or suicide. It is also used to treat Bulimia, to control chronic pain, to prevent migraine headaches, and to treat pathological weeping and laughing syndrome associated with multiple sclerosis. Generic "Elavil" may also be used for purposes not mentioned here.

How Should I Take Generic "Elavil"?

Dosage should be initiated at a low level and increased gradually, noting carefully the clinical response and any evidence of intolerance.
In general, the following dosages are recommended:
Adults: 50-75mg daily either in divided doses or as a single night time dose increasing to 150-200mg daily. A maintenance dose of 50-100mg at night should be given to lessen the chances of relapse.
Adolescents and Elderly: 25-50mg daily either in divided doses or as a single night time dose. A maintenance dose of 25-50mg may be sufficient.

Do not use the tablets after the expiry date shown on the product packaging. Keep the tablets below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light, and in the original packaging. NEVER give it to anyone else. It may harm them, even if their symptoms are the same as yours.

What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Elavil"?

    Do not take Generic "Elavil" Tablets if:
  • you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breast-feeding.
  • you or your child are sensitive to Generic "Elavil", other tricyclic antidepressants or any of the ingredients in the product. The 25mg tablets contain sunset yellow, which may cause allergic-type reactions including asthma. Allergy is more common in those people who are allergic to aspirin.
  • you or your child have heart disease including irregular heart beats, heart block, heart failure, coronary artery disease or have had a recent heart attack.
  • you or your child suffer from periods of increased and exaggerated behaviour (mania).
  • you or your child have liver disease.
  • you or your child are taking other medicines such as other medicines to treat depression.
    Make sure you have told your doctor if your child or you:
  • have any blood abnormality.
  • have any psychiatric (mental).
  • are not able to pass water or have been told you have an enlarged prostate gland.
  • have the metabolic disease porphyria.
  • have a diseased thyroid gland and are taking medicines to treat a thyroid disorder.
  • have a history of epilepsy.
  • are being given electroconvulsive therapy.
  • have narrow-angle glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye).
If your child is under 7 years old and has been prescribed this medicine tell your doctor, as it may not be suitable.

What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?

Immediately take the missed dose as soon as you remember but if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and take the subsequent dose according to schedule. It is important to remember not to take a double dose of this medication.

What happens if I OVERDOSE?

OVERDOSE of Generic "Elavil" may be characterized by: Convulsions; Confusion; Hallucinations; Drowsiness; Agitation; Vomiting; Low Blood Pressure; Disturbed concentration; Rapid or irregular heartbeat; Dilated pupils and other eye problems; Dizziness; Fatigue; Fainting; Unresponsive.

What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Elavil"?

Severe side effects of this product may include the following: An allergic reaction which may include difficulty in breathing, swelling of lips, tongue, or face, closing of the throat and hives; A fast or irregular heartbeat; A heart attack; High blood pressure; Seizures; Fever with increased sweating, muscle stiffness, or severe muscle weakness; Difficulty in urinating.
Stop taking this product if you experience any of these side effects and immediately inform your doctor. Less severe side effects of this product may include the following: Nausea; Sweating; Drowsiness or Dizziness; Dry mouth and eyes; Loss of weight or appetite; Constipation; Ringing in the ears; Mild tremor; Mild agitation, weakness, or headache; Dream and sleep disturbances; Irritability; Restlessness.
Other side effects not mentioned here may also occur. Seek for your doctor's concern on these matters.

What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Elavil"?

Generic "Elavil" may be dangerous if taken with the following drugs: Sudafed and Proventil; Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft; Amoxapine; Benadryl and Tavist; Phenobarbital; Catapres; Cimetidine; Disulfiram; Bentyl and Donnatal; Premarin and Oral Contraceptives; Ethchlorvynol Mellaril and Thorazine; Nardil and Parnate; Tambocor and Rythmol; emerol and Percocet; Cogentin and Larodopa; Quinidine; Tegretoland Dilantin; Halcion and Dalmane; Thyroid; Librium and Xanax; Warfarin.
Other drugs not mention here may also react with Generic "Elavil" so it is better if you inform your doctor if you are taking any.

Additional Information

While on therapy with Generic "Elavil", patients should be advised as to the possible impairment of mental and/or physical abilities required for performance of hazardous tasks, such as operating machinery or driving a motor vehicle.
