Eldepryl

CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic "Eldepryl" is a selective inhibitor of MAO-B; MAO-B metabolizes dopamine. Generic "Eldepryl" exhibits little therapeutic benefit when used independently, but enhances and prolongs the anti-Parkinson effects of levodopa. It acts on the nervous system to increase the levels of a chemical called dopamine. Low dopamine levels in the brain are responsible for many of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, so this medication works by rebalancing the levels of dopamine. This medication may be taken alone or in combination with levodopa to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Active Ingredients: Selegiline hydrochloride
Inactive Ingredients: citric acid, lactose, magnesium stearate, and microcrystalline cellulose.

What is Generic "Eldepryl" PRESCRIBED For?

Generic "Eldepryl" is prescribed along with levodopa/carbidopa for people with Parkinson's disease. It is used when levodopa/carbidopa no longer seems to be working well. Generic "Eldepryl" has no effect when taken by itself; it works only in combination with levodopa or levodopa/carbidopa. Parkinson's disease, which causes muscle rigidity and difficulty with walking and talking, involves the progressive degeneration of a particular type of nerve cell. Early on, levodopa or levodopa/carbidopa alone may alleviate the symptoms of the disease. In time, however, these medications work less well; their effectiveness seems to switch on and off at random, and the individual may begin to experience side effects such as involuntary movements and "freezing" in mid-motion.
Generic "Eldepryl" may be prescribed at this stage of the disease to help restore the effectiveness of levodopa or levodopa/carbidopa. When you begin to take Generic "Eldepryl", you may need a reduced dosage of the other medication.

How Should I Take Generic "Eldepryl"?

The recommended regimen for the administration of Generic "Eldepryl" is 10 mg per day administered as divided doses of 5 mg each taken at breakfast and lunch. There is no evidence that additional benefit will be obtained from the administration of higher doses. Moreover, higher doses should ordinarily be avoided because of the increased risk of side effects. After two to three days of Generic "Eldepryl" treatment, an attempt may be made to reduce the dose of levodopa/carbidopa. A reduction of 10 to 30% was achieved with the typical participant in the domestic placebo controlled trials who was assigned to Generic "Eldepryl" treatment. Further reductions of levodopa/carbidopa may be possible during continued Generic "Eldepryl" therapy.

Store this medicine at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Eldepryl"?

Generic "Eldepryl" should not be taken by anyone who: is allergic to selegiline or any of the ingredients of the medication; has problems such as excessive tremor or involuntary movements of the muscles of the face; has severe psychosis or severe dementia; is taking the medication called meperidine (and possibly other narcotic pain relievers); has active peptic ulcers.

What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?

Take it as soon as you remember. If you do not remember until late afternoon or evening, skip the dose you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at once.

What happens if I OVERDOSE?

Symptoms of a Generic "Eldepryl" overdose may include severe headache, hallucinations, vision problems, sweating, cool or clammy skin, fast or uneven heart rate, feeling light-headed, fainting, or seizure (convulsions).

What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Eldepryl"?
