How Should I Take Generic "Epivir"?

Adults: The recommended oral dose of Generic "Epivir" for adults is 300 mg daily, administered as either 150 mg twice daily or 300 mg once daily, in combination with other antiretroviral. If Generic "Epivir" is administered to a patient dually infected with HIV and HBV, the dosage indicated for HIV therapy should be used as part of an appropriate combination regimen.

Pediatric Patients: Infants/Children/Adolescents: The recommended oral dose of Generic "Epivir" for HIV-infected pediatric patients 3 months up to 16 years of age is 4 mg/kg twice daily (up to a maximum of 150 mg twice a day), administered in combination with other antiretroviral agents.

What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Epivir"?

This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
This medicine is not recommended for children under three months of age.
Generic "Epivir" is contraindicated in patients with previously demonstrated clinically significant hypersensitivity to any of the components of the products: Decreased kidney function; Enlarged liver (hepatomegaly); Liver disease; Hepatitis, especially chronic hepatitis B or C; History of alcohol abuse; Obese women.

What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?

What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Epivir"?

The possible side effects of Generic "Epivir" are lactic acidosis and severe liver problems, including fatal cases, have been reported with the use of reverse transcriptase inhibitors, alone or in combination.
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience nausea, vomiting, or unusual or unexpected stomach discomfort; weakness and tiredness; shortness of breath; weakness in the arms and legs; yellowing of the skin or eyes; or pain in the upper stomach area.
If you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives), stop taking Generic "Epivir".

What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Epivir"?

Generic "Epivir" is predominantly eliminated in the urine by active organic cationic secretion. The possibility of interactions with other drugs administered concurrently should be considered, particularly when their main route of elimination is active renal secretion via the organic cationic transport system (e.g., trimethoprim).
The manufacturer recommends that this medicine is not used in combination with the following medicines: foscarnet; ganciclovir; zalcitabine.

Additional Information

The safety of this medicine in pregnancy has not been established. It should only be used during pregnancy if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs any potential risk to the developing foetus. It is not recommended in the first trimester. It is recommended that women infected with the HIV virus must not breastfeed their infants under any circumstances, in order to avoid transmission of the virus to the baby.
