CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic "Famvir" is drug that fights off viruses. It works by slowing down the growth and spread of herpes viruses. It does this so that the body can fight off infection. This drug cuts down the amount of time the symptoms of viral infection are present.

Active Ingredients: famciclovir
Inactive Ingredients: hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, lactose, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycols, sodium starch glycolate and titanium dioxide.

What is Generic "Famvir" PRESCRIBED For?

Generic "Famvir" is indicated for: treatment or suppression of recurrent genital herpes in immunocompetent patients; treatment of recurrent mucocutaneous herpes simplex infections in HIV-infected patients; Shingles (herpes zoster); To treat attacks of genital herpes and prevent recurrent attacks of genital herpes

How Should I Take Generic "Famvir"?

Herpes Zoster: The recommended dosage is 500 mg every 8 hours for 7 days. Therapy should be initiated promptly as soon as herpes zoster is diagnosed. No data are available on efficacy of treatment started greater than 72 hours after rash onset.
Recurrent genital herpes: The recommended dosage is 125 mg twice daily for 5 days. Initiate therapy at the first sign or symptom if medical management of a genital herpes recurrence is indicated. The efficacy of Generic "Famvir" has not been established when treatment is initiated more than 6 hours after onset of symptoms or lesions.
Suppression of recurrent genital herpes: The recommended dosage is 250 mg twice daily for up to 1 year. The safety and efficacy of Generic "Famvir" therapy beyond 1 year of treatment have not been established.
For recurrent orolabial or genital herpes simplex infection, the recommended dosage is 500 mg twice daily for 7 days.
Do not store above 30°C.

What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Famvir"?

Safety and efficacy in children under the age of 18 years have not been established.
This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.

What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?

Doses of Generic "Famvir" should not be missed. If as dose is missed, however, take it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and take the subsequent dose according to your normal dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of this drug unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

What happens if I OVERDOSE?

Symptoms of overdose of Generic "Famvir" include the following: Seizures, Hallucination, Kidney damage.
If you experience any of these symptoms, you may be experiencing overdose. Inform your doctor afterwards.

What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Famvir"?

    Generic "Famvir" may have any of the following serious allergic reactions:
  • Closing of the throat
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Swelling of the face, lips or tongue
  • Hives
If you experience any of these, discontinue use and inform your doctor.
    Generic "Famvir" may also have less serious side effects that are more likely to occur. They include the following:
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Tingling of the hands, or feet
  • Itching
If you experience any of these, continue using the product but inform your doctor immediately.

What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Famvir"?

Taking Generic "Famvir" with antidepressants (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft) can increase chances of an emergency condition called "serotonin syndrome".
Generic "Famvir" may interact with the drug known as Probenecid. Taking Generic "Famvir" with this drug may cause dangerous side effects.
Other drugs may also interact with Generic "Famvir". Inform your doctor if you are taking any medications other than Generic "Famvir" including over the counter prescriptions.
