CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic "Floxin" is a DNA gyrase inhibitor. DNA gyrase is an essential bacterial enzyme that maintains the superhelical structure of DNA. DNA gyrase is required for DNA replication and transcription, DNA repair, recombination, and transposition; bactericidal.

Active Ingredients: Ofloxacin
Inactive Ingredients: Anhydrous lactose, modified corn starch, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, polysorbate 80, sodium starch glycolate, titanium dioxide and may also contain synthetic yellow iron oxide.

    Generic "Floxin" is indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections such as:

  • Infections of the prostate
  • Pneumonia
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Skin infections
  • Urinary Tract Infections

How Should I Take Generic "Floxin"?

    Oral: Adults:
  • Chronic bronchitis (acute exacerbation), community-acquired pneumonia, skin and skin structure infections (uncomplicated): 400 mg every 12 hours for 10 days.
  • Urethral and cervical gonorrhea (acute, uncomplicated): 400 mg as a single dose
  • Cervicitis/urethritis: 300 mg every 12 hours for 7 days
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (acute): 400 mg every 12 hours for 10-14 days
  • Due to other organisms: 200 mg every 12 hours for 7 days
  • Prostatitis: 200 mg every 12 hours for 6 weeks
  • Epididymitis (gonorrhea; unlabeled use): 300 mg twice daily for 10 days
    Ophthalmic: Children >1 year and Adults:
  • Conjunctivitis: Instill 1-2 drops in affected eye(s) every 2-4 hours for the first 2 days, then use 4 times/day for an additional 5 days
  • Corneal ulcer: Instill 1-2 drops every 30 minutes while awake and every 4-6 hours after retiring for the first 2 days; beginning on day 3, instill 1-2 drops every hour while awake for 4-6 additional days; thereafter, 1-2 drops 4 times/day until clinical cure.
  • Acute otitis media with tympanostomy tubes: Children 1-12 years: Instill 5 drops (or the contents of 1 single-dose container) into affected ear(s) twice daily for 10 days
  • Chronic suppurative otitis media with perforated tympanic membranes: Children >12 years and Adults: Instill 10 drops (or the contents of 2 single-dose containers) into affected ear twice daily for 14 days

What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Floxin"?

Generic "Floxin" is listed in the FDA pregnancy category C, which means that it is not known whether, doses of Generic "Floxin" more than the recommended daily allowance will harm an unborn baby. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant before taking Generic "Floxin" or any supplemental medicine.
Generic "Floxin" is not indicated for children younger than 12 years of age. Generic "Floxin" may interfere with bone development.
Before taking Generic "Floxin" , tell your doctor if yo experience any of the following: Kidney diseases; Seizures; Epilersy.
You may not be able to take Generic "Floxin" or you may need a special monitoring or dosage adjustment during treatment.

What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?

Take the missed dose up to 2 hours late. Skip it and take only the next regularly scheduled dose of Generic "Floxin" if more than 2 hours have passed since the missed dose. A double dose of Generic "Floxin" medication should not be taken unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

What happens if I OVERDOSE?

The most common symptom of Generic "Floxin" overdose is seizures.

What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Floxin"?

Stop taking Generic "Floxin" if you experience any of the following serious side effects: Difficulty in breathing; Closing of the throat; Swelling of the lips; Swelling of the tongue; Swelling of the face; Hives; Seizures; Confusion; Hallucinations; Liver damage; Yellowing of the skin or eyes; Nausea; Abdominal pain or discomfort; Unusual bleeding; Bruising; Severe fatigue; muscle or joint pain

What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Floxin"?

Before taking Generic "Floxin" tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs: Theophylline, Probenecid, Warfarin, Cimetidine, Cyclosporine, Glipizide, Glyburide, Ibuprofen, Naproxen.
You may not be able to take Generic "Floxin", or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above.

Additional Information

May cause drowsiness, dizziness, nervousness, or insomnia; quinolones reported to cause restlessness, hallucinations, euphoria, depression, panic, and paranoia.
