Imitrex

CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic Imitrex is an antimigraine medicine. Migraine headaches are believed to result from dilatation of the blood vessels in the head. Sumatriptan causes constriction of the blood vessels, thus relieving migraine headache. While it is very effective in relieving migraine, it does not prevent or reduce the number of attacks of migraine.

Active Ingredients: sumatriptan
Inactive Ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, dibasic calcium phosphate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and sodium bicarbonate. Each 100-mg tablet also contains hypromellose, iron oxide, titanium dioxide, and triacetin.

What is Generic Imitrex PRESCRIBED For?

Generic Imitrex is used to relieve migraine and its associated nausea and light sensitivity. It does not prevent or reduce the number of attacks of migraine. It should not be used to treat other types of headaches.

How Should I Take Generic Imitrex?

Generic Imitrex should be taken as soon as your symptoms appear, but may be used at any time during an attack.
Generic Imitrex tablets should be swallowed whole, with liquid. If you have had no relief 2 hours after taking Generic Imitrex Tablets, you may take a second dose of up to 100 milligrams, if your doctor advises it. If the headache returns, you may take additional doses at intervals of at least 2 hours. You should not take more than 300 milligrams in one day.
Store Generic Imitrex away from heat and light, at room temperature, in the case provided. If your medication has expired (the expiration date is printed on the treatment pack), throw it away as instructed, but keep the autoinjector. If your doctor decides to stop your treatment, do not keep any leftover medicine unless your doctor tells you to. Throw away your medicine as instructed.

What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic Imitrex?

    Do not use Generic Imitrex if:
  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Generic Imitrex
  • you have a history of ischemic heart disease (eg, angina, heart attack), coronary artery disease (CAD), other moderate to severe heart problems, brain blood vessel disease (eg, stroke, transient ischemic attack), or other blood vessel disease (eg, Raynaud syndrome, ischemic bowel disease)
  • you have uncontrolled high blood pressure or severe liver problems
  • you have certain types of migraines (eg, hemiplegic, basilar)
  • you have used certain other migraine medicines within the past 24 hours (eg, an ergot derivative [eg, dihydroergotamine, methysergide], another serotonin 5-HT 1 receptor agonist [eg, eletriptan, rizatriptan])
  • you are taking sibutramine
Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?

Generic Imitrex is not for regular use. Take it only during an attack.

What happens if I OVERDOSE?

Seek emergency medical treatment if you think you have used too much of this medicine Symptoms may include blue skin or lips; chest pain; dilated pupils; loss of coordination; paralysis; redness of the fingers or toes; seizures; slow or difficult breathing; tremor.

What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic Imitrex?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Generic Imitrex.
Side effects may include:
Burning sensation, dizziness or vertigo, feeling of heaviness, feeling of tightness, flushing, mouth and tongue discomfort, muscle weakness, nausea (nasal spray), neck pain and stiffness, numbness, pressure sensation, redness at the site of injection, sinus or nasal discomfort (nasal spray), sore throat, tingling, unusual taste (nasal spray), vomiting (nasal spray), warm/cold sensation.
In addition to the above side effects, people taking Generic Imitrex for cluster headache may experience nausea, a "pins and needles" sensation, vomiting, or wheezing.

What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic Imitrex?

    Drug Interactions" If Generic Imitrex is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either may be increased, decreased, or altered. It is important to check with your doctor before combining Generic Imitrex with the following:
  • Drugs classified as MAO inhibitors, including the antidepressants Nardil and Parnate
  • Ergot-containing drugs such as Cafergot and Ergostat
  • Fluoxetine (Prozac)
  • Fluvoxamine (Luvox)
  • Paroxetine (Paxil)
  • Sertraline (Zoloft)

Additional Information

Although the danger is minimal, Generic Imitrex has triggered serious heart problems in people with heart disease. For that reason, the doctor may want you to take your first dose of Generic Imitrex in the office, where you can be closely watched for ill effects.
