InviraseCLASS and MECHANISM of Action Generic Invirase is an oral medication that is used for treating infections with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
During infection with HIV, the HIV virus multiplies within the body's cells. Viruses are released from the cells and spread throughout the body where they infect other cells. In this manner, HIV infection is perpetuated among new cells that the body produces continually. During the production of the viruses, new proteins are made. Some of the proteins are structural proteins, that, is, proteins that form the body of the virus. Other proteins are enzymes which manufacture DNA and other components for the new viruses. Protease is the enzyme that forms the new structural proteins and enzymes. Generic Invirase blocks the activity of protease and results in the formation of defective viruses that are unable to infect the body's cells. As a result, the number of viruses in the body (the viral load) decreases. Nevertheless, Generic Invirase does not prevent the transmission of HIV among individuals, and it does not cure HIV infections or AIDS. Active Ingredients: saquinavir mesylate Inactive Ingredients: lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone K30, sodium starch glycolate, talc, and magnesium stearate. What is Generic Invirase PRESCRIBED For? Generic Invirase in combination with ritonavir and other antiretroviral agents is indicated for the treatment of HIV infection. The twice daily administration of Generic Invirase in combination with ritonavir is supported by safety data from the MaxCmin 1 study and pharmacokinetic data. The efficacy of Generic Invirase with ritonavir has not been compared against the efficacy of antiretroviral regimens currently considered standard of care.
How Should I Take Generic Invirase? Take Generic Invirase exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not share Generic Invirase with anyone and do not exceed your recommended dosage. Take Generic Invirase with a meal or within 2 hours afterwards. This allows the drug to be properly absorbed by your body. Your doctor will perform laboratory tests before you start therapy with Generic Invirase and at regular intervals during your therapy to see how you are reacting to the medication
Store Generic Invirase in the refrigerator in a tightly closed bottle. The capsules should be used within 3 months if they've been allowed to reach room temperature. What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic Invirase? Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease or liver disease. You may not be able to take Generic Invirase, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of these conditions.
Generic Invirase is classified by the FDA as a pregnancy category B drug. Pregnancy category B means that animal studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. HIV-positive women who become pregnant should discuss the benefits and possible side effects of anti-HIV treatment to help protect their babies from HIV. It is not known whether Generic Invirase passes into breast milk and what effects it may have on a nursing baby. However, to prevent HIV transmission of the virus to uninfected babies, it is recommended that HIV-positive mothers not breast-feed. What Happens if I MISS A DOSE? Take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take a double dose.
What happens if I OVERDOSE? There have been no reports of Generic Invirase overdosage. However, any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical treatment immediately.
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic Invirase? The most frequent side effects are headache, weakness, diarrhea, nausea and stomach discomfort. Generic Invirase also may cause skin reactions, liver failure, seizures and failure of the pancreas (pancreatitis). Like other protease inhibitors, use of Generic Invirase may be associated with redistribution or accumulation of body fat, increased cholesterol and worsening of diabetes.
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic Invirase?
Additional Information Generic Invirase will not cure an HIV infection. You will continue to face the possibility of complications, including opportunistic infections (rare infections that develop only when the immune system falters, such as certain types of pneumonia, tuberculosis, and fungal infections). Therefore, it is important that you remain under the care of a doctor and keep all your follow-up appointments.
