Invirase

CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic Invirase is an oral medication that is used for treating infections with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
During infection with HIV, the HIV virus multiplies within the body's cells. Viruses are released from the cells and spread throughout the body where they infect other cells. In this manner, HIV infection is perpetuated among new cells that the body produces continually. During the production of the viruses, new proteins are made. Some of the proteins are structural proteins, that, is, proteins that form the body of the virus. Other proteins are enzymes which manufacture DNA and other components for the new viruses. Protease is the enzyme that forms the new structural proteins and enzymes. Generic Invirase blocks the activity of protease and results in the formation of defective viruses that are unable to infect the body's cells. As a result, the number of viruses in the body (the viral load) decreases. Nevertheless, Generic Invirase does not prevent the transmission of HIV among individuals, and it does not cure HIV infections or AIDS.

Active Ingredients: saquinavir mesylate
Inactive Ingredients: lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone K30, sodium starch glycolate, talc, and magnesium stearate.

What is Generic Invirase PRESCRIBED For?

Generic Invirase in combination with ritonavir and other antiretroviral agents is indicated for the treatment of HIV infection. The twice daily administration of Generic Invirase in combination with ritonavir is supported by safety data from the MaxCmin 1 study and pharmacokinetic data. The efficacy of Generic Invirase with ritonavir has not been compared against the efficacy of antiretroviral regimens currently considered standard of care.

Pregnancy category B means that animal studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. HIV-positive women who become pregnant should discuss the benefits and possible side effects of anti-HIV treatment to help protect their babies from HIV.
It is not known whether Generic Invirase passes into breast milk and what effects it may have on a nursing baby. However, to prevent HIV transmission of the virus to uninfected babies, it is recommended that HIV-positive mothers not breast-feed.
