CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic Lamictal is an oral drug that is used for treating seizures. It is chemically unrelated to other anti-seizure drugs. The precise mechanism by which Generic Lamictal exerts its anti-seizure action is not known.

What is Generic Lamictal PRESCRIBED For?

Generic Lamictal is an anti-epileptic medication, also called an anticonvulsant.
Generic Lamictal is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat seizures in adults and children who are at least 2 years old. Generic Lamictal is also used to delay mood episodes in adults with bipolar disorder.
Generic Lamictal may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

How Should I Take Generic Lamictal?

Take Generic Lamictal tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. Do not chew these tablets--they ave a bitter taste. If Generic Lamictal upsets your stomach, take it with food or milk. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.
Keep out of reach of children in a container that small children cannot open. Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic Lamictal?

You should not use this medication if you are allergic to lamotrigine- the active ingredient of Generic Lamictal. Before taking Generic Lamictal, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any other seizure medications, or if you have: kidney disease; liver disease; or heart disease.

    Don't take Generic Lamicatal with the following drugs:
  • acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol®)
  • birth control pills, patches, rings, or injections
  • bosentan
  • carbamazepine
  • medicines used to treat HIV or AIDS infection (examples: indinavir, ritonavir)
  • methotrexate
  • phenobarbital
  • phenytoin
  • primidone
  • pyrimethamine
  • rifampin
  • sevelamer
  • trimethoprim
  • valproic acid
