CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic Lamprene, is an antileprosy agent available as soft gelatin capsules for oral administration.This medicine binds preferentially to mycobacterial DNA to inhibit mycobacterial growth; also has some anti-inflammatory activity through an unknown mechanism

Active Ingredients: Clofazimine

What is Generic Lamprene PRESCRIBED For?

This medication is used in the treatment of leprosy. It is often taken in combination with other anti-leprosy medication. When this medicine is used to treat ``flare-ups'' of leprosy, it may be given with a cortisone-like medicine. Generic Lamprene may also be used for other problems as determined by your doctor.

How Should I Take Generic Lamprene?

Take Generic Lamprene capsules by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow capsules whole with a full glass of water. It is best to take Generic Lamprene with food. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better. This can take up to three years. Do not stop taking except on your prescriber's advice.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat and light. Do not store in the bathroom.

What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic Lamprene?

Generic Lamprene should be used with caution in patients who have gastrointestinal problems such as abdominal pain and diarrhea. Dosages of Generic Lamprene of more than 100 mg daily should be given for as short a period as possible and only under close medical supervision. If a patient complains of colicky or burning pain in the abdomen, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, the dose should be reduced, and if necessary, the interval between doses should be increased, or the drug should be discontinued.

What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

What happens if I OVERDOSE?

Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an Generic Lamprene overdose, seek medical attention immediately.

What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic Lamprene?

More common side effects include: loss of appetite, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dry skin and discoloration (from pink to brownish-black) of the skin, stools, urine, saliva, sweat, tears or lining of the eyelids. Other side effects reported are changes in taste, dry or irritated eyes, headache, fever, increased blood sugar and an increased sensitivity to sunlight. Notify your doctor if any of these symptoms become bothersome. Notify your doctor immediately if any of these less common side effects occur: black or bloody stools, severe stomach pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual weakness, depression. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic Lamprene?

Don't take Generic Lamprene with dapsone.
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. Additional Information

If your symptoms do not improve within 1 to 3 months, or if they become worse, check with your doctor. It may take up to 6 months before the full benefit of this medicine is seen.
Generic Lamprene may cause pink or red to brownish-black discoloration of the skin within a few weeks after you start taking it. Because of the skin discoloration, some patients may become depressed. The discoloration will go away when you stop taking this medicine. However, it may take several months or years for the skin to clear up completely. If skin discoloration causes you to feel very depressed or to have thoughts of suicide, check with your doctor immediately.
