Generic Mellaril is in a class of drugs called phenothiazines. It works by changing the actions of chemicals in the brain. Generic Mellaril helps to treat disordered thoughts and some other emotional, nervous, and mental problems. It also treats behavioral problems in children.

Generic Mellaril may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Take Generic Mellaril exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Your doctor may want to monitor your heartbeats and obtain a blood sample before starting and periodically during treatment with Generic Mellaril. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Generic Mellaril can be taken with or without food. Do not stop taking Generic Mellaril without first talking to your doctor. It may be several weeks before you begin to feel better, and you may require continuous treatment for quite some time.

Before taking Generic Mellaril, tell your doctor if you have: a bone marrow disease, glaucoma, seizures, Parkinson's disease, an enlarged prostate or difficulty urinating, liver disease, or kidney disease. You may not be able to take Generic Mellaril, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above.
It is not known whether Generic Mellaril will harm an unborn baby. Do not take Generic Mellaril without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. It is not known whether Generic Mellaril passes into breast milk. Do not take Generic Mellaril without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. If you are over 60 years of age, you may be more likely to experience side effects from Generic Mellaril. Your doctor may prescribe a lower dose of this medication or you may require special monitoring during treatment.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

Seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms of a Generic Mellaril overdose include uncontrollable movements, agitation, seizures, severe dizziness or fainting, coma, very deep sleep, irregular heartbeats, and high or low body temperature.

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Generic Mellaril.
Side effects may include: Blurred vision, breast development in men, breast milk secretion, constipation, diarrhea, drowsiness, dry mouth, impotence, nausea, swelling in the arms and legs (edema), tardive dyskinesia (see "Special warnings about this medication), vomiting.

Do not take Generic Mellaril with any of the following drugs: psychiatric medications such as fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil, Paxil CR), and fluvoxamine (Luvox); or blood pressure medications such as pindolol (Visken) or propranolol (Inderal, Inderal LA, others). Taken with any of these drugs, Generic Mellaril may cause irregular heartbeats that could lead to death. This is not a complete list of drugs that may interact with Generic Mellaril and cause heart problems. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
Generic Mellaril may interact with other drugs that cause drowsiness, including alcohol, antidepressants, antihistamines, pain relievers, anxiety medicines, seizure medicines, and muscle relaxants. Dangerous sedation, dizziness, or drowsiness may occur if Generic Mellaril is taken with alcohol or any of these medications. Talk to your doctor before taking Generic Mellaril in combination with alcohol or any other medicines.
Generic Mellaril also interacts with many medications other than the ones listed here. Before taking thioridazine, tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking. During treatment, do not start taking any new drug or herbal product without first talking to your doctor.
