MotiliumCLASS and MECHANISM of Action Generic "Motilium" is a type of medicine called a dopamine antagonist.
Generic "Motilium" works primarily by blocking dopamine receptors found in an area of the brain known as the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ). The CTZ is activated by nerve messages from the stomach when an irritant is present. It is also activated directly by agents circulating in the blood, for example anti-cancer medicines. Once activated, it sends messages to another area of the brain, the vomiting centre, which in turn sends messages to the gut, causing the vomiting reflex. Blocking the dopamine receptors in the CTZ prevents nausea messages from being sent to the vomiting centre. This reduces the sensation of nausea and prevents vomiting. Generic Generic "Motilium" also blocks dopamine receptors found in the upper end of the digestive system. This results in tightening of the muscles at the entry to the stomach, relaxation of the muscles at the exit of the stomach and increased contraction of the muscles in the stomach itself. These actions speed the passage of food through the stomach into the intestine, which physically helps to prevent vomiting. Both actions make Generic "Motilium" useful in treating nausea and vomiting due to many causes, including anti-cancer chemotherapy, emergency hormonal contraception and in migraine. Generic "Motilium" is a drug that has, as a side effect, stimulating or increasing milk production, probably by increasing prolactin production by the pituitary gland. Prolactin is the hormone that stimulates the cells in the mother's breast to produce milk. Generic "Motilium" increases prolactin secretion indirectly, by interfering with the action of dopamine whose action is to decrease the secretion of prolactin by the pituitary gland. Active Ingredients: Domperidone What is Generic "Motilium" PRESCRIBED For? Generic "Motilium" is generally used for disorders of the gastrointestinal tract (gut).
Generic "Motilium" works particularly well to increase milk production under the following circumstances: It has frequently been noted that a mother who is pumping milk for a sick or premature baby in hospital has a decrease in the amount she pumps around 4 or 5 weeks after the baby is born. The reasons for this decrease are likely many, but Generic "Motilium" generally brings the amount of milk pumped back to where it was or even to higher levels. When a mother has a decrease in milk supply, often associated with the use of birth control pills (avoid Estrogen containing birth control pills while breastfeeding), or on occasion, for no obvious reason when the baby is 3 or 4 months old, Generic "Motilium" will often bring the supply back to normal. How Should I Take Generic "Motilium"? Generally, we start Generic "Motilium" at 20 milligrammes (two 10 mg tablets) four times a day. If taking Generic "Motilium" 4 times a day is inconvenient, 30 milligrammes (three 10 mg tablets) three times a day is fine. Printouts from the pharmacy often suggest taking Generic "Motilium" 30 minutes before eating, but that is because of its use for digestive intolerance.
Keep out of the reach and sight of children. Do not store above 25°C. Do not take this medicine after the month shown on the pack. What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Motilium"? Generic "Motilium" must never be used as the first approach to correcting breastfeeding difficulties. Generic "Motilium" is not a cure for all things. It must not be used unless all other factors which may result in insufficient milk supply have been dealt with first.
This medicine is not recommended for long term use. Generic "Motilium" tablets contain lactose and may be unsuitable for people with lactose intolerance, glucose/galactose malabsorption or a genetic disorder leading to accumulation of galactose in the blood (galactosaemia). Generic "Motilium" suspension contains sorbitol and may be unsuitable for people with sorbitol intolerance. Since this medicine is highly metabolized in the liver, Generic "Motilium" should be used with caution in patients with hepatic impairment (and in the elderly). What Happens if I MISS A DOSE? Take your medicine as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until that is due then continue as normal. Do not take a double dose to make up for the forgotten dose.
What happens if I OVERDOSE? Symptoms of overdosage may include drowsiness, disorientation and extrapyramidal reactions especially in children. If an overdose is suspected the local emergency should be contacted immediately.
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Motilium"? Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways.
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Motilium"? Generic "Motilium" may increase the speed of absorption of certain medicines from the gut, for example paracetamol.
Concomitant administration of anti-cholinergic drugs may inhibit the anti-dyspeptic effects of Generic "Motilium" Anti-muscarinic agents and opioid analgesics may antagonize the effect of Generic "Motilium" Generic "Motilium" suppresses the peripheral effects (digestive disorders, nausea and vomiting) of dopaminergic agonists. Since Generic "Motilium" has gastro-kinetic effects, it could influence the absorption of concomitant orally administered medicines, particularly those with sustained release or enteric coated formulations. As Generic "Motilium" interferes with serum prolactin levels, it may interfere with other hypoprolactinaemic agents and with some diagnostic tests. Antacids and anti-secretory agents lower the oral bioavailability of domperidone. They should be taken after meals and not before meals, i.e. they should not be taken simultaneously with Generic "Motilium". Reduced gastric acidity impairs the absorption of domperidone. Oral bioavailability is decreased by prior administration of cimetidine or sodium bicarbonate.
Additional Information Always take Generic "Motilium" exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
