Phenegran

CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic "Phenegran" is a phenothiazine in the same class of drugs as chlorpromazine (Thorazine) and trifluoperazine (Stelazine). However, unlike the other drugs in this class, Generic "Phenegran" is not used clinically as an anti-psychotic.
It works by decreasing the effects of histamine, a chemical the body releases in response to certain irritants. Histamine narrows air passages in the lungs and contributes to inflammation. Antihistamines reduce itching and swelling and dry up secretions from the nose, eyes, and throat.

Active Ingredients: Promethazine HCl.
Inactive Ingredients: Lactose, magnesium stearate, and methylcellulose, saccharin sodium.

What is Generic "Phenegran" PRESCRIBED For?

Generic "Phenegran" is used to prevent motion sickness, nausea or vomiting, itching associated with allergies or for sedation.

How Should I Take Generic "Phenegran"?

Generic "Phenegran" tablets are taken by mouth. They can be taken with or without food. For prevention of motion sickness, a tablet should be used 30 to 60 minutes before the motion begins and then every 8 to 12 hours as needed. For sedation, it is given at bedtime. For other problems, for example, itching, it can be given every 4 to 8 hours.

Generic "Phenegran" tablets should be stored between 2° (36°F) and 30°C (86°F).

What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Phenegran"?

Generic "Phenegran" tablets should not be used in children less than two years of age because it can depress respiration and has caused fatalities in children under two. It should be used cautiously in children older than two.
Generic "Phenegran" is contraindicated in patients that are allergic to promethazine or any of the ingredients in this medication. Patients with lung symptoms including asthma should avoid taking Generic "Phenegran".

What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?

If you are taking Generic "Phenegran" on a regular schedule, take the forgotten dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double dose.

What happens if I OVERDOSE?

If Generic "Phenegran" overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately.

What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Phenegran"?

Here are some side effects that may happen when take Generic "Phenegran": blurred vision, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, increased or decreased blood pressure, nausea, rash, sedation, vomiting.

What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Phenegran"?

Generic "Phenegran" should not be used along with: MAO (mono-amine oxidase) inhibitor-class of antidepressants; Antihistamines; Phenothiazines; Tricyclic antidepressants.
Excessive sedation may occur when Generic "Phenegran" is combined with other medications that depress the central nervous system (brain). Such drugs include ethanol, barbiturates, anti-anxiety medications, sedatives, other phenothiazines, and narcotic pain medications.

When Generic "Phenegran" is used with antipsychotics, metoclopramide (Reglan), and amoxapine (Asendin) an increase in the risk of certain neurologic reactions that affect movement of muscles, called extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) may happen.

Generic "Phenegran" is not recommended for use during breast-feeding because they can stimulate newborns or cause seizures in premature infants.
