Serevent

CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic Serevent is a long-acting beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist drug that is currently prescribed for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD. It is currently available as a metered-dose inhaler (MDI) or a proprietary "disk-styled" inhaler that releases a powdered form of the drug. Generic Serevent is an agonist at beta-2 receptors. These receptors are present in large numbers in the lungs and are located on bronchiolar smooth muscle. Stimulation of beta-2 receptors in the lung causes relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle, which produces bronchodilation and a resultant increase in bronchial airflow. Generic Serevent can inhibit the bronchoconstriction produced by histamine, methacholine, and exercise. In addition, Generic Serevent appears to inhibit the late phase of allergen-induced bronchoconstriction, which usually appears after the bronchodilating effects of the shorter-acting agents have resolved. The extended action of Generic Serevent is due to its long, lipophilic side chain. This side chain appears to bind to an exosite present only near beta-2 receptors. Binding to this exosite allows the active portion of the molecule to remain at the receptor site and continually engage and disengage with the receptor, therefore providing a long duration of action.
