Pharmacological action: antibiotics, aminoglycoside. Generic Sisomicin is an antibiotic produced by Micromonospora inyoensis. It is closely related to gentamicin C1a, one of the components of the gentamicin complex (gentamicins).

Sisomicin, a newly developed aminoglycoside, was administered parenterally to 119 surgical patients with infections of the peritoneum and various wounds. Final success of antibiotic therapy appeared to be primarily dependent upon the eventual establishment of surgical drainage, yet antibiotic therapy was exceedingly important up until then in maintainance of life and in pre-operative preparation.

Bacteriologic analysis demonstrated a predominance of gram-negative rods, with susceptibility being greater to sisomicin than to other antibiotics as tested by disc and tube dilution methods. Specific drug toxicity was not encountered, except for a possible adverse contribution to pre-existing ischemic renal damage in two of the patients.
