SkelaxinCLASS and MECHANISM of Action Generic Skelaxin is a muscle relaxant used to relax muscles and relieve pain caused by strains, sprains, and other musculoskeletal conditions. Its exact mechanism of action is not known, but it may be due to general central nervous system depression. It is considered to be a moderately strong muscle relaxant, with relatively low incidence of side effects.
Active Ingredients: metaxalone Inactive Ingredients: alginic acid, ammonium calcium alginate, corn starch and magnesium stearate. What is Generic Skelaxin PRESCRIBED For? Generic Skelaxin, a muscle relaxant, is used with rest, physical therapy, and other measures to relax muscles and relieve pain and discomfort caused by strains, sprains, and other muscle injuries. This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
How Should I Take Generic Skelaxin? Generic Skelaxin comes as a tablet to take oraly. It usually is taken three or four times a day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Generic Skelaxin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Ask your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.
Store Generic Skelaxin at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom.
What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic Skelaxin? You should not use this medication if you are allergic to Generic Skelaxin, or if you have: anemia (a lack of red blood cells); severe kidney disease; or severe liver disease.
Before using Generic Skelaxin, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have liver or kidney disease. You may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take Generic Skelaxin. This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. It is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Do not give this medicine to a child younger than 12 years old. What Happens if I MISS A DOSE? Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at your next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What happens if I OVERDOSE? Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. An overdose of Generic Skelaxincan be fatal.
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic Skelaxin?
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic Skelaxin? Before taking Generic Skelaxin, tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs:
a barbiturate such as amobarbital (Amytal), butabarbital (Butisol), mephobarbital (Mebaral), secobarbital (Seconal), or phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton); or medicines to treat psychiatric disorders, such as chlorpromazine (Thorazine), haloperidol (Haldol), mesoridazine (Serentil), pimozide (Orap), or thioridazine (Mellaril). If you are using any of these drugs, you may not be able to use Generic Skelaxin, or you may need dosage adjustments or special tests during treatment. There may be other drugs not listed that can affect Generic Skelaxin. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor. Additional Information Keep all appointments with your doctor. Do not let anyone else take your medications. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription. Do not share this medicine with others for whom it was not prescribed. Do not use this medicine for other health conditions. Keep this medicine out of the reach of children and pets. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain necessary refills before your supply runs out.
