CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic Synthroid is a synthetic (man-made) version of the principle thyroid hormone, thyroxine (T4) that is made and released by the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormone increases the metabolic rate of cells of all tissues in the body. In the fetus and newborn, thyroid hormone is important for the growth and development of all tissues including bones and the brain. What is Generic "Synthroid" PRESCRIBED For?

Generic Synthroid is a thyroid hormone used to treat low thyroid levels. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

How Should I Take Generic "Synthroid"?

Generic Synthroid comes as a tablet to take orally. It usually is taken once a day on an empty stomach (1/2 to 1 hour before breakfast. Take Generic Synthroid exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Starting doses and dose changes may differ with individual patients based upon the presence of cardiovascular disease, the development of tolerance (reduced effectiveness with continued use), side effects to the medication, and blood levels of thyroid hormone. It may take one to three weeks after initiating therapy with Generic Synthroid or changing the dose before effects are seen. Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).

What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Synthroid"?

Generic Synthroid is contraindicated in patients with untreated subclinical (suppressed serum TSH level with normal T3 and T4 levels) or overt thyrotoxicosis of any etiology and in patients with acute myocardial infarction. Generic Synthroid is contraindicated in patients with uncorrected adrenal insufficiency since thyroid hormones may precipitate an acute adrenal crisis by increasing the metabolic clearance of glucocorticoids. Generic Synthroid is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of the inactive ingredients in Generic Synthroid.

What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?

If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses. If you miss 2 or more doses in a row or if you have any questions about this, check with your doctor.

What happens if I OVERDOSE?

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include extreme nervousness, confusion, excessive sweating, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, and seizures.

What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Synthroid"?

Generic Synthroid therapy is usually well-tolerated. If symptoms occur, often they are due to toxic levels of thyroid hormone and the symptoms are those of hyperthyroidism. Symptoms may include all or some of the following: chest pain, increased heart rate or pulse rate, excessive sweating, heat intolerance, nervousness, headache, insomnia, diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, or fever. Women may experience irregular menstrual cycles.

What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Synthroid"?

Inform your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you are using, especially : antacids that contain aluminum, the prescription ulcer medicine sucralfate (Carafate), the cholesterol-lowering drugs cholestyramine. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Generic Synthroid. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
