Vitamin C

CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin.
Generic Vitamin C is required for the synthesis of collagen, an important structural component of blood vessels, tendons, ligaments, and bone. Generic Vitamin C also plays an important role in the synthesis of the neurotransmitter, norepinephrine. Neurotransmitters are critical to brain function and are known to affect mood. In addition, Generic Vitamin C is required for the synthesis of carnitine, a small molecule that is essential for the transport of fat to cellular organelles called mitochondria, for conversion to energy. Recent research also suggests that Generic Vitamin C is involved in the metabolism of cholesterol to bile acids, which may have implications for blood cholesterol levels and the incidence of gallstones.

Generic Vitamin C is also a highly effective antioxidant. Even in small amounts Generic Vitamin C can protect indispensable molecules in the body, such as proteins, lipids (fats), carbohydrates, and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) from damage by free radicals and reactive oxygen species that can be generated during normal metabolism as well as through exposure to toxins and pollutants (e.g. smoking). Generic Vitamin C may also be able to regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamin E.

Active Ingredients: ascorbic acid
Inactive Ingredients: cellulose, croscarmellose, vegetable stearic acid, vegetable magnesium stearate, silica

What is Generic "Vitamin C" PRESCRIBED For?

Generic Vitamin C is a nutrient valuable for tissue growth, protection of cell membranes from toxic wastes, wound healing, and, as mentioned, support of the immune system. It supports the growth of collagen and cartilage, protecting in this way against many of the effects of aging.
As an antioxidant, Generic Vitamin C helps combat free radicals, and it may help with cancer, high cholesterol, cataracts, diabetes, allergies, asthma, and periodontal disease. The effectiveness of Generic Vitamin C is believed to be increased when taken with vitamin E.

How Should I Take Generic "Vitamin C"?

The best way to get the daily requirement of essential vitamins, including Generic Vitamin C, is to eat a balanced diet that contains a variety of foods from the food guide pyramid.
Generic Vitamin C should be consumed every day because it is not fat-soluble and, therefore, cannot be stored for later use.

The Food and Nutrition Board at the Institute of Medicine recommends the following amounts of Generic Vitamin C:
    Infants and Children
  • 0 - 6 months: 40 milligrams/day (mg/day)
  • 7 - 12 months: 50 mg/day
  • 1 - 3 years: 15 mg/day
  • 4 - 8 years: 25 mg/day
  • 9 - 13 years: 45 mg/day
    Adolescents
  • Girls 14 - 18 years: 65 mg/day
  • Boys 14 - 18 years: 75 mg/day
    Adults
  • Men age 19 and older: 90 mg/day
  • Women age 19 year and older: 75 mg/day
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and those who smoke need higher amounts. Ask your doctor what is best for you.
Store medicine away from heat and direct light. Do not store your medicine in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places. Heat or moisture may cause the medicine to break down and not work the way it should work. Throw away medicine that is out of date or that you do not need.

What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Vitamin C"?

Before taking Generic Vitamin C, tell your doctor or talk to your pharmacist if you:
  • have diabetes,
  • have kidney disease or an increased risk of kidney stone formation,
  • have a tartrazine sensitivity,
  • have a sulfite sensitivity,
  • are on a sodium restricted diet,
  • are undergoing testing of the stool for blood, or
  • are taking warfarin (Coumadin).
You may not be able to take Generic Vitamin C, or you may require special monitoring if you have any of the conditions or are taking any of the medicines listed above.

What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose. It is not necessary to take a double dose

What happens if I OVERDOSE?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose. It is not necessary to take a double dose However in higher doses there may be some toxicity with one of the side effects being diarrhea. In some cases, higher doses of Generic Vitamin C may cause kidney stones or anemia, due to an interference with the absorption of vitamin B12.

What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Vitamin C"?

Generic Vitamin C toxicity is very rare, because the body cannot store the vitamin. However, amounts greater than 2,000 mg/day are not recommended because such high doses can lead to stomach upset and diarrhea.
Too little Generic Vitamin C can lead to signs and symptoms of deficiency, including:
  • Dry and splitting hair
  • Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums)
  • Bleeding gums
  • Rough, dry, scaly skin
  • Decreased wound-healing rate
  • Easy bruising
  • Nosebleeds
  • Weakened tooth enamel
  • Swollen and painful joints
  • Anemia
  • Decreased ability to fight infection
  • Possible weight gain because of slowed metabolism
A severe form of Generic Vitamin C deficiency is known as scurvy, which mainly affects older, malnourished adults. Keep all medicine locked up and away from children.

What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Vitamin C"?

A number of drugs are known to lower Generic Vitamin C, requiring an increase in its intake. Estrogen-containing contraceptives (birth control pills) are known to lower Generic Vitamin C in plasma and white blood cells. Aspirin can lower Generic Vitamin C if taken frequently. For example, two aspirin tablets taken every six hours for a week has been reported to lower white blood cell Generic Vitamin C by 50%, primarily by increasing urinary excretion of Generic Vitamin C .
Large doses of Generic Vitamin C may block the action of warfarin, requiring an increase in dose to maintain its effectiveness. Individuals on anticoagulants should limit their Generic Vitamin C intake to 1 gram/day and have their prothrombin time monitored by the clinician following their anticoagulant therapy. Because high doses of Generic Vitamin C have also been found to interfere with the interpretation of certain laboratory tests (e.g., serum bilirubin, serum creatinine, and the guaiac assay for occult blood) it is important to inform one's health care provider of any recent supplement use

Additional Information

Generic Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin, and, as such, is not stored in the body. This means it must be regularly replaced by diet and/or supplementation.
