Generic Zestril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor which blocks the production of a hormone (chemical signal carried in the blood) called angiotensin II. Lisinopril competes with angiotensin I for its binding site on the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), an enzyme which converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II. As angiotensin II is a vasoconstrictor and a negative feedback mediator for renin activity, lower angiotensin II plasma levels result in decreased blood pressure and increased plasma renin activity. Baroreceptor reflex mechanisms, stimulated by the fall in blood pressure, release kininase II, an enzyme identical to ACE that degrades bradykinin, a vasodilator.

Inactive Ingredients: calcium phosphate, magnesium stearate, mannitol, red ferric oxide, starch.

Generic Zestril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure and complications of diabetes.

Take this medication by mouth, usually once a day or as directed by your doctor. You may take this drug with or without food. Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time each day. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. For the treatment of high blood pressure, it may take 2 to 4 weeks before the full benefit of this drug occurs. It may take several weeks or months to see the full benefit when this drug is used for congestive heart failure.
It is important to continue taking this medication even if you feel well. Most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick. Store Generic Zestril at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Generic Zestril may increase the risk of dangerous allergic reactions. Before taking Generic Zestril, tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction that involved swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat or difficulty breathing. Seek emergency medical attention if you develop any of these symptoms while taking Generic Zestril.
Before taking Generic Zestril, tell your doctor if you
have kidney disease;
are on a salt-restricted diet or have high levels of potassium in your blood;
are taking salt substitutes, potassium supplements (e.g., K-Dur, Klor-Con), or potassium-sparing diuretics such as amiloride (Midamor), triamterene (Dyrenium, Dyazide, Maxzide), or spironolactone (Aldactone); or
have diabetes.
You may not be able to take Generic Zestril, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above.
Generic Zestril is in the FDA pregnancy category D. This means that Generic Zestril is known to harm an unborn baby. When used during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, Generic Zestril can cause injury and even death to the developing fetus.Do not take Generic Zestril if you are pregnant.
It is not known whether Generic Zestril passes into breast milk, and its effects on a nursing baby are not known. Do not take Generic Zestril without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. Symptoms of a Generic Zestril overdose may include feeling extremely dizzy or light-headed, or fainting.

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; severe stomach pain; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
feeling light-headed, fainting;
urinating more or less than usual, or not at all;
fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;
tired feeling, muscle weakness, and pounding or uneven heartbeats;
chest pain; or
swelling, rapid weight gain.
Less serious side effects may be more likely to occur, such as:
cough;
dizziness, drowsiness, headache;
nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, upset stomach; or
mild skin itching or rash.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Before taking Generic Zestril, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs:
lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith);
a potassium supplement such as K-Dur, Klor-Con;
salt substitutes that contain potassium;
insulin or diabetes medication you take by mouth;
aspirin or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), diclofenac (Voltaren), etodolac (Lodine), indomethacin (Indocin), ketoprofen (Orudis), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), and others; or
a diuretic (water pill).
If you are using any of these drugs, you may not be able to use Generic Zestril or you may need dosage adjustments or special tests during treatment.
There may be other drugs not listed that can affect Generic Zestril. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.

Do not share this medicine with others for whom it was not prescribed. Do not use this medicine for other health conditions. Keep this medicine out of the reach of children and pets. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain necessary refills before your supply runs out.
