12-Jun-2008 : Roger Clemens' notoriety in the world of performance-enhancing drugs just keeps growing.

The New York Daily News reported this week that Clemens is among many athletes who have discovered the off-label benefits of Viagra, the noted male enhancement product.

While many athletes, as the story goes, use the popular lifestyle drug for its intended use - as an aid for erectile dysfunction - others have tweaked to other apparent advantages.

Among these, Viagra - plus over-the-counter substitutes that mimic the effects - are said to be able to help build endurance, deliver oxygen and performance-enhancing drugs to muscles more efficiently and offset the impotence that can be a side-effect to testosterone injections.

The drug is certainly not illegal and not banned by Major League Baseball - or any other sports, for that matter - but its growing use has prompted the World Anti-Doping Agency to launch a study into whether Viagra can be used to cheat.

"All my athletes took it," the Daily News quoted BALCO founder Victor Conte, whose clients included Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi and disgraced track star Marion Jones. "It's bigger than creatine. It's the biggest product in nutritional supplements."

A Daily News source said Clemens kept a stash of the clearly marked pills in a vitamin bottle in his locker at Yankee Stadium.
