15-Mar-2008 : A significant drug-trafficking network has been dismantled in the Montirigie following a lengthy investigation conducted by the Sureti du Quibec regional investigation office in conjunction with Chateaguauy and Longueuil municipal police and the Roussillon and Richelieu St-Laurent intermunicipal board.

The investigation began last April. Since November, four dismantling phases led to 30 raids and 35 arrests, but reportedly none in the Chateauguay area. On the other hand, according to SQ police agent Ronald McInnis, drugs produced by the network were sold on Chateauguay territory.

The two presumed leaders appeared in Longueuil court. Candiac residents Maxime Faille and Vincent Ouellet, both 24, are facing 11 and 22 charges respectively, including production, possession and trafficking of drugs, conspiracy to traffic and possession of illegal firearms. They were detained until their preliminary hearing last Wednesday. Other arrests are expected to follow in the case.

Innovative producers
As for the assets seized during the raids, their value comes to close to $14 million, including $205,000 in cash. Among the drugs confiscated were four kilos of cocaine; 8,700 cannabis plants and equipment for producing them; nearly 43 kilos of leaves; 18 kilos of cannabis in bulk; 7,754 pills of all types (viagra, ecstasy, amphetamines and metamphetamines).

The network had developed an unusual method of producing cannabis. With cylinders in the shape of an octagon standing 10 metres tall, the cannabis growers used gravity to irrigate the plants which themselves were clinging to the cylinders, McInnis explained.

Two taser guns and two money-counting machines were also confiscated. One of the places raided was being protected by an individual armed with a 12-gage sawed-off shotgun.

In addition, illicit assets and criminal products were seized, including a luxury boat, a condominium, vehicles bearing the trademark of Infinity, Jetta and Lincoln, and some bank accounts.

Previously unknown to police from the region, this production and distribution network extended all the way to Ontario.
