Viagra issue makes senior citizen smile24-Jun-2008 : Recently a letter to the editor in your newspaper set out that a young child, in the presence of his guardian, read the word "Viagra" plainly visible on an advertising sign in front of a plaza on Victoria Avenue, Vineland. The woman was very upset when the young child asked her what Viagra was. She implored that the person responsible remove the advertisement immediately. Approximately one week later, I observed that the advertisement is still on display.
The whole issue brought a smile to my face and caused me, an old senior citizen, to reflect on years gone by. As a young after-school delivery boy for a pharmacy in the 1950s, one of my tasks was to wrap individual boxes of sanitary napkins in plain brown wrapping paper. Heaven forbid that the words Kotex and/or sanitary napkins should be placed on public view. Similarly, contraceptives could not be placed on display. They were kept in a drawer, behind the counter out of reach and sight of prospective buyers. Wow, how times have changed! Sanitary napkins now come in an array of multi-coloured boxes. Today, contraceptives are widely displayed in most pharmacies. Now what does an adult tell a child when he/she observes contraceptives on display in the local drug store? In reality what is Viagra? It is a prescription drug used to treat the physical disability of impotence in men. Men who are currently taking nitrates such as nitroglycerin should not take Viagra because taken together they can lower blood pressure too much. For those people who are physically unable to enjoy one of life's favourite pastimes, it is a miracle drug to do what comes naturally for the rest of the population. Simply put, my perception is that public advertising for a natural alternative to Viagra is okay and may even mean fewer serious side effects for some people. I have shopped at the health store responsible for the advertising and have talked with a mature respectful young man who is certainly not selling sex as we have come to know it in today's permissive society. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. No Viagra in Niagara? Pity. Source: Niagarathisweek.com
